-A Terrifyingly Healthy Halloween Treat

Doctor Invented ExtendSnacks – A Terrifyingly Healthy Halloween Treat

Halloween snacks don’t have to be horrifyingly unhealthy, sugary treats to be fun. This year, children with diabetes can enjoy Halloween fun too! Dr. Francine Kaufman, a world-renowned endocrinologist and past president of the American Diabetes Association, invented ExtendSnacks (ExtendBar and ExtendCrisps)- with 150 or less calories per serving, and the ability to control blood sugar for up to 9 hours. ExtendSnacks are ideal deliciously healthy Halloween treats for kids and adults alike. Delicious and nutritious, ExtendSnacks are a fun and frightfully healthy alternative to sugary Halloween treats. ExtendBars, and ExtendCrisps single serving bags, make perfect healthy treats that allow all trick-or-treaters to join the fun.

St. Louis, MO, October 22, 2009 – ExtendSnacks, the maker of ExtendBar and ExtendCrisps, with 150 or less calories per serving and the ability to help control blood sugar for up to 9 hours, today announced that Halloween doesn’t have to be filled with sugary, fat-filled treats to be fun and indulgent. What Halloween treats we choose are even more important as our nation faces an epidemic of childhood obesity and diabetes. Invented by world-renowned pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Francine Kaufman, ExtendSnacks are fun and deliciously healthy Halloween treats for all people wanting to provide a healthier Halloween, but are especially important to children with diabetes who typically have to watch their friends enjoy the fruits of their trick-or-treat labor, as they severely limit their own participation.

This year, more than ever, it’s important to celebrate a healthier Halloween. The rates of both childhood obesity and diabetes are increasing at unprecedented rates in the United States. The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years, going from 6.5% in 1980 to 17.0% in 2006. The rate among adolescents aged 12 to 19 more than tripled, increasing from 5% to 17.6%. Furthermore, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 36.1 million 5- to 13-year-olds will be trick-or-treating this Halloween; that translates to about 6.3 million obese trick-or-treaters this year. Unfortunately, most candy and snacks handed out to trick-or-treaters are exactly the kind of snacks that contribute to the obesity and diabetes epidemics – they’re loaded with sugar and fat.

Parents are becoming much more aware of these issues and are constantly on the lookout for healthy alternatives that also taste great. ExtendSnacks offer them exactly what they are looking for. “In the spirit of Halloween…, delicious and nutritious ExtendSnacks are a fun and frightfully healthy alternative to sugary Halloween treats,” says Vijay Chauhan, President of ExtendSnacks. “…now children with diabetes can enjoy trick-or-treating without the temptation of candy loaded with sugar.”

Halloween Snacks Don’t Have to be Horrifyingly Unhealthy
The average candy bar has anywhere from 30-60g of carbohydrates – most of which comes directly from sugar with very little nutritional value. In fact, sugar is the #1 ingredient in most popular candy. Candy bars are also loaded with Fat and Saturated Fat, both of which can cause increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and/or morbid obesity. At their young age, kids don’t know to check the nutrition facts panels – they rely heavily on the recommendations of adults.

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to introduce kids to healthy snacks that taste great too. For example, an ExtendBar® Peanut Butter Chocolate Delight is sugar-free, low fat, low-saturated fat, packed with protein (11g) and loaded with fiber (5g). Furthermore, it has been clinically proven to help control blood sugar for up to 9 hours. Most importantly, this delectable bar tastes similar to the popular Peanut Butter Cups that we all know and love.

Halloween Isn’t Just for Kids Anymore
The Human Resource Management's Benefits Study noted that Halloween is being embraced and observed in the workplace as never before. More than one-third of U.S. companies offer some sort of Halloween celebration. But this fun day doesn’t have to be dreadfully met by dieters tempted by high-calorie treats. ExtendSnacks are a healthy way for adults to enjoy Halloween and they take the ‘guilt’ out of snacking while keeping the taste-buds excited.

• New snacks aim to keep hunger pangs away

From The Nashua Telegraph (March 4, 2009).
By: Lynda Murray, RD

New snacks aim to keep hunger pangs away

Too busy to eat? Too hungry to think? Craving chocolate?

If any of these scenarios sound familiar to you, I have just the thing: Extend Snacks. These delicious snacks can help stabilize blood sugar for up to nine full hours. Extend helps eliminate the drops in blood sugar that occur between meals, triggering hunger.

Developed by a leading endocrinologist, Francine Kaufman, who specializes in diabetes, Extend products contain a patented combination of slow-burning carbohydrates, protein and fat, which breaks down gradually, providing you with a continuous source of energy. This avoids the roller-coaster ride that most meals provide, leaving you more satisfied, with a content feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Extend Snacks do just what the name suggests – extend the time between meals. Unlike other snacks, which can digest into blood sugar in a short two-hour time span, plummeting blood sugars to tablecloth chewing levels, they convert slowly and safely to help extend the time between meals for up to nine hours.

"Research shows that Extend Snacks can reduce the calories consumed at the next meal by 21 percent," says Kensie Turnbaugh, health-care program coordinator at Extend Snacks in St. Louis. "(Extend Snacks) digest slowly at a rate of about 2-3 grams of carbohydrate per hour for up to eight hours."

Turnbaugh consumes the products regularly and notes that she doesn't really experience hunger.

"I have a shake with milk for breakfast, a bar mid-morning (about three hours later) and bag of crisps late afternoon (about four hours after small lunch)," she said. "I'm not reaching for the next unhealthy snack to feel satisfied, like I normally would."

I have also witnessed this "arrest-your-appetite" miracle in action. I am an avid cross-country skier. Gliding across a snowscape on my skis is my favorite aerobic activity, burning up to 600 calories an hour. When I am out in that white winter wonderland, I need sustained fuel, and ExtendBars are my snack solution. I carry one in my pocket, can quickly eat one and continue with my day. I love that I am not hassled with symptoms of hunger such as fatigue, irritability, growling stomach or headache.

"Extend bars come in five different flavors," Turnbaugh says. "The peanut butter and chocolate is the favorite flavor. If you haven't tried it, you are in for a treat. In addition to the peanut butter chocolate delight, there is mixed berry, apple cinnamon, peanut and chocolate."

The bars are made from uncooked cornstarch, a low glycemic index carbohydrate. Each bar has only 150 calories, 3 grams of fat, no saturated or trans fat, 0 grams of sugar, 5-6 grams of fiber and 20 grams of carbohydrate. Amazingly, only 1 gram of the carbohydrate content has any short-term impact on blood sugar levels. They score 2 points on the Weight Watchers system.

Extend Snacks come in a variety of flavors and textures to please even the most sophisticated snacker. Aside from the delicious bars, there are shake mixes and crisps.

These crisps are bite-sized morsels that come in a variety of flavors such as Italian herb, cinnamon, honey barbecue, white cheddar and zesty ranch. Turnbaugh's favorite flavor? "Zesty ranch, hands down. I love something with a little zip."

Extend also makes shakes, which whip up in no time after you add milk or water. Available in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, they were originally developed to help people living with diabetes.

Extend Snacks can help you whittle your waist as you gain control over your hunger. They can also help you enjoy improved sleep if used before bedtime, by reducing disturbing nighttime blood sugar lows by up to 75 percent. Extend products are excellent for athletes, providing those fueling an active lifestyle with a sustained supply of energy for up to nine hours. Extend bars have helped some people with diabetes compete and successfully complete a marathon. If you need sustained energy to get through your own personal marathon of life, try the new Extend products. I think you will agree they can help you be your very own success story.

Here is a delicious recipe using the Extend vanilla shake. The vanilla is so versatile, unlimited options exist for adding fruit or peanut butter to create your own signature shake. The pumpkin pie is the favorite of Jonathan Lindberg, assistant marketing manager at Extend Snacks:

PUMPKIN PIE SHAKE: 1 packet vanilla ExtendShake1 cup skim milk1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spiceWhipped topping (optional)Follow the directions for a Vanilla ExtendShake.Add pumpkin pie spice as you mix your shake.Place your shake in the refrigerator for 10 minutes, or until cold.Top with sugar-free whipped topping.

• Good-Bye Sugary Soda, Hello ExtendBar!

RELEASED 1/21/2008

GOOD-BYE SUGARY SODA, HELLO EXTENDBAR!
Local Doctor/Inventor, Dr. Kaufman Introduces ExtendBar to Southern California Retail

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 21, 2008) – Francine R. Kaufman, M.D., a key figure in the LA Unified School District banning of sodas, is launching a uniquely healthy food bar into Southern California retail. ExtendBar®, which helps control blood sugar levels for up to nine hours and a very popular direct to consumer product since 1999, is now available in Albertson’s, Ralph’s and Walgreens locations throughout Southern California. Dr. Kaufman hopes that making this product more easily accessible will enable families to make lifestyle choices which produce lasting health benefits and reduce risk of disease. Over the last decade, obesity and diabetes have reached epidemic proportions in America and worldwide; Dr. Kaufman created ExtendBar as a response to the challenges of these growing epidemics.

ExtendBar is an innovative snack bar that is specifically formulated to help control blood sugar for up to nine hours, longer than any other snack on the market today, and holds fourteen patents. Sugar is the fuel that provides energy to our body’s cells for everything from movement to thought. Dr. Kaufman designed the bar (in her own LA home) using slowly metabolizing carbohydrates to extend the release of glucose into the bloodstream. By doing so, ExtendBar has been clinically proven to naturally reduce hunger, minimize blood sugar swings and prevent low blood sugar levels, and provide a continuous source of energy which can help for strenuous activities. With a balanced nutrition profile ExtendBar is a healthy product for anyone wishing to improve or maintain their health.

“After seeing thousands of patients suffering from the effects of abnormal blood sugar levels – ranging from loss of energy and focus, to unpredictable mood swings, to seizures – I desperately wanted to do something to improve their health and their quality of life,” says Dr. Kaufman, and she has. As an internationally respected endocrinologist, she has authored over 150 medical articles and has been a guiding force in the fight against obesity and diabetes. Dr. Kaufman is the head of the Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; the past president of the American Diabetes Association; author of Diabesity; and a distinguished professor of pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Most recently, the Discovery Health Channel presented DIABETES: A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC, which follows Dr. Kaufman as she tours the world. Over a six-month period, Dr. Kaufman journeys from Los Angeles to Cape Town, South Africa; Chennai, India; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Melbourne, Australia; and Helsinki, Finland, in her quest to increase focus on the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes. (To view video segments visit http://health.discovery.com/centers/diabetes/video.html and click the appropriate tabs!)

With ExtendBar, Dr. Kaufman has endeavored to build a brand that people with diabetes, dieters, healthy actives, and their children can count on to assist them in managing their blood sugar levels and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. ExtendBar has built a loyal and passionate consumer following over the past seven years, and is committed to growing this audience by making its products more readily available to consumers in the retail outlets they shop daily. “We believe partnering with Albertsons, Ralphs and Walgreens is a great opportunity for more people to experience the ExtendBar brand and what so many of our loyal, long-time customers have discovered about us,” said Vijay Chauhan, President of Clinical Products, LLC. “Our products really work!”
